Why facebook doesn't have a 'dislike' button

How many times have you seen someone comment; “Where is the dislike button?” when referring to a post a friend has made on facebook? Chances are, if you’re an active facebook user, you’ve seen this a multitude of times.

There are appropriate times for this button to exist. Perhaps when someone says their animal is sick or that they were in a car accident. Of course, the list of appropriate reasons for “needing” the dislike button goes on and on and on.

So, why isn’t there one? It’s rather simple. As a society, we cannot be trusted with a dislike button. Facebook was designed and created to be a community where friends reconnect. It’s supposed to be a happy place.

Youtube has a like and dislike button. And every time that 40,000 people like something and 87 people don’t, the 87 people who don’t have something negative to say and the 40,000 who do make fun of the 87 people who don’t.

So, facebook keeps it simple. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

But.. but… but.. what if I just want to dislike that my friends grandmother is in the hospital? Well.. it’s rather simple. Click on the comment box and tell your friend you’re sorry for what they’re going through. Better yet, send them a private email or a phone call to be there for them. Our society is so reliant on technology to communicate feelings that emotions and feelings are becoming more and more extinct.

Think about it. You make a post “I am getting married!!” 56 people “like” your post and 4 people write a comment of congrats and how happy they are for you. Do you remember the 56 names that liked your post? Most often.. no. You remember the people that took an extra moment to actually say something….

This is beginning to get ridiculous. Yes, I am using my real company name to respond to you because I have nothing to hide. The mere fact that you’re trying to post about me so my real clients will find me in a search engine with the hopes that they’ll think less of me is funny. Unfortunately for you, I’ve represented myself with class and dignity and have merely posted facts. I’ll post some more facts for you. But, first I must apologize to everyone for I am new to tumblr and haven’t figured out how to break my paragraphs and the usual methods of
and [p] aren’t working so I apologize.

Fact 1: The post I made on that photo you’re claiming I deleted is still there. http://www.facebook.com/RajaOfficial?sk=photos#!/photo.php?fbid=1943052734875&set=o.176522619030774&type=1&theater You just got lazy and stopped looking.

Fact 2: On May 15th, you commented on the aforementioned photograph and called me the B word and said that I was not professional because I took the photograph in a doorway and you accused me of lecturing fans not to alter my photos and made fun of me putting my logo on my images. Alexis and Raja asked me to take the photo there because it was in their dressing room and the rest of the room was cluttered.

Fact 3: My logo goes on ALL of my clients photos unless they are for printing purposes. As the artist who took the photos, that is indeed my legal right.

Fact 4: I, as a fan, went out and shot these events FREE of charge and took time to edit these photos to share them with the performers and their fans. It is my right to ask that my images not be altered and that my logo not be removed. That is not lecturing. That is forming an understanding between myself as the artist and the audience/fan base. In doing so, everyone has respected me except for you and as a result, I continue to post more images.

My mother always told me to never get mad at someone for doing something they didn’t know they weren’t supposed to do. Therefore, I make my intentions and expectations known in advance. And it seems nobody but you has a problem with that.

Fact 5: On May 15th, you sent me an email calling me an “anal retentive control freak like Alexis”. You then went on to say and again I quote, “And Yes, you were a petty b**** to initially post the photos WITH THE fingerwagging. No other prominent photographer of famous people ever does that.”

Fact 6: Getty Images is one of the largest when it comes to taking celebrity photos. Getty puts a watermark straight through the middle of their images. I am tactful enough to put my logos somewhere on my images where it doesn’t actually go on top of the person which does put me at risk that someone can crop my logo out and still have important parts of the photo left. That’s a risk I take which is why I caption my posts on facebook to “please not alter” my photos.

Fact 7: You AGAIN emailed about the logo you claim you do not care about by saying and again, I quote “BTW Alexis Mateo is using a photo from LOGO without any credit or permission on her site. OHhhhhhh escandalo!”

Fact 8: Over 90% of the images taken on all of these performers pages are fan photos from point and shoot cameras who do not own photography businesses. Of the few remaining that are professional photographers, about 1/2 ask for photo credit. If the photo you’re referring to in the aforementioned text was taken by a pro photographer who didn’t care if she used the unwatermarked images and released them unwatermarked, that is that photographers decision. I don’t release my unwatermarked images for anything other than publications where the magazine gives me photo credit beneath the images. That again is my choice.

Fact 9: If you hate my logos and my compositions and my nicely asking fans to not change or alter my images so much, then ignore my photos. Stop reposting them merely to try to bash me. It’s seriously ridiculous and none of your own fans are even liking your ranting posts.

Fact 10: I’m about tired of you saying I wanted to sue all tumblr bloggers and that now I am changing my mind and being a phony. Again, on May 15th in email correspondence with you, I wrote and I quote:

“Copyright laws are in place for a reason. I am sure if photographers knew you’re posting their images on that website of yours with NO photo credit to the artist and WITHOUT permission, they’d be pretty pissed. I put my logo on my photos so people do know who took them. Furthermore, you have ZERO right to re-post my photo on your website. I didn’t give you permission to do so. However, you don’t see me calling attorneys even though you’re calling me a b**** and posting my photos on your website. I guess I am not that big of a b**** after all.”

Fact 11: Those were my exact words. I said YOU DON’T see me calling attorneys. And I never mentioned ANYTHING about ANY other Tumblr bloggers but YOU. Because you’re the rude person using my images on your page just to say something negative with every one of them. You’re the one saying I should not have my logo on my photos and you’re the one emailing me telling me that you have “fair use” to do whatever you want with my photos. EVEN with fair use, you must obtain permission from the artist. http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html

Fact 12: I did find out about Tumblr because of you on Facebook. Then I spent a few days submitting photos to people who happily posted them. Then, I created my own Tumblr page so I could post them for other people to take. I didn’t stumble when I said I submitted photos to people before I created a page here.

Fact 13: 95% of my facebook fan page photo posts say “Please feel free to share these images”. And anyone who wants to know the facts can go to Alexis, Yara or Raja’s pages and dig into the photos to find my images and read the captions for themselves.

I DO NOT have a problem with any blogger using my photos “as is” with the logo on them. And thank you to the multitude of bloggers that have used my photos respectfully to share them with fans! :-)
